Teachings

When teaching on a subject it should be taught in context and all the verses related to that topic should be included.

False teachings occur when verses are taken out of context and other verses dealing with that same topic are distorted &/or omitted. Although topical teaching are important we mainly teach through the Bible verse by verse in order to acquire God's full counsel.

Translation bias can also lead to false teachings. For example when the Greek word oikumene is incorrectly translated as whole world rather than as Roman World. A second example is when the Greek word ge is translated as earth rather than land.

Let us examine the doctrine of raising hands as one example:

Exodus 17:11

Whenever Moses held up his hand, Israel prevailed, and whenever he lowered his hand, Amalek prevailed.

Psalm 28:2

Hear the voice of my pleas for mercy, when I cry to you for help, when I lift up my hands toward your most holy sanctuary.

Psalm 63:4

So I will bless you as long as I live; in your name I will lift up my hands.

Psalm 134:2

Lift up your hands to the holy place and bless the Lord!

Psalm 141:2

Let my prayer be counted as incense before you, and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice!

Nehemiah 8:6

And Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God, and all the people answered, “Amen, Amen,” lifting up their hands. And they bowed their heads and worshiped the Lord with their faces to the ground.

Lamentations 2:19

“Arise, cry out in the night, at the beginning of the night watches! Pour out your heart like water before the presence of the Lord! Lift your hands to him for the lives of your children, who faint for hunger at the head of every street.”

Lamentations 3:41

Let us lift up our hearts and hands to God in heaven:

1 Timothy 2:8-10

I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling; likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works.

Luke 24:50

Then he led them out as far as Bethany, and lifting up his hands he blessed them.

Moses lifted up his hands. Psalms and other Old Testament examples abound. Paul instructs it. Jesus does it.

That passes the test of sound doctrine.

What, if any are the counter-arguments?

The only one I have ever heard was Romans 13:14 about not causing a brother to stumble.

Obeying God's Word does not cause a brother to stumble. Romans 13:14 is taken out of context in this case.

Again, Moses does it. Numerous Old Testament examples abound. Paul instructs it. Jesus does it. That is sound doctrine.
